Any visitors to this page ought to know that things are really happening over at Instagram, where you can see the uncomplicated simplicity of what went by my face on a given afternoon while we were all waiting around for big literary news, which at best tends to come in waves every four or five years.

This Reading Had an Awesome Crowd

Like a hundred people, spilling out onto the sidewalk!  I was pleased to be the featured author for Spoken Word Night at Kelowna's Pulp Fiction Coffee House.  I read from All-Day Breakfast for the first time ever, the friendly fist-fight scene in the diner parking lot, plus the old story "Scenes From a War" ("The Russian One," I sometimes call it) from Geist magazine and 04: Best Canadian Stories.

With event curator Lauren Marshall.  It was really great.

All-Day Breakfast, the greatest novel ever, will be published March 1 by Douglas & McIntyre.

Non-Breakfast Photo Submission!

Darlin' James Baker has submitted this photo reference to short story "The Nootka Sound," which appeared in the Spring 2007 issue of cutting-edge (or so I say) culture magazine Geist.  "Captain James Cook and his crew," wrote the Table of Contents, "discover the rhythm and music of a new hip hop world in a parallel universe at the western limit of the British Empire on the Pacific shore."

Because Nootka Sound is totally a place, right, and Motown recordings, for instance, are called The Detroit Sound?  Which means The Nootka Sound, which is hip hop circa 1778, ought to have its own place in musical history, right?

Maybe Geist sells back-issues.  That might help.

Writing a Novel

All right, I've settled on which half-written novel I'll try to complete -- the newest one. So one of the half-novels, which so far is really awesome, may have to wait another five years before it's resumed. It feels a bit like I've put something in the oven but then started doing laundry, because laundry is somehow sexier, while the thing in the oven just sits there. And the oven was never turned on, despite how promising the batter looks.

(Mostly posting this song because of its title, and I can't say I condone this much smoking. But doesn't Father John Misty look like Highlander star Christopher Lambert?)

Copy-Edit Released to the World

I've sent my proofread of the above-named novel back to Mr. Fairbridge the copy-editor, so I think the only thing left for me to do will be proofing the galleys in six months or so.  D&M will release the book in March 2015.  Now to decide which of three half-written books I should fall into.

The Golden Age of Online Journals

I was looking through my so-called archives on the old website, and this story, first posted nine years ago, is still up and alive!  That guy Kent Bruyneel sure did work hard, and still does I assume.

I still like this story a whole lot.  Much of the sleigh ride scene has been co-opted for a flashback in All-Day Breakfast, so read this and then when the novel comes out in March you can find the scene and beam at it admiringly.  You knew the sleigh ride way back when.

Slight jiggling of publication date II.

Due to some medical weirdness on my part, publication of All-Day Breakfast has been backed up to a firm March 2015.  I'm entering changes to the copy-edit right now, so that's the month to sharpen a pencil for and circle in its entirety on the next calendar you buy.

D&M/Harbour Publishing is a fine a group of people, and Anna Comfort O'Keeffe in particular.  Thanks to all of those guys, as well as my confederate of 20 years, freelance editor Derek Fairbridge.

Slight jiggling of publication date.

Quick update: All-Day Breakfast will be published in Fall 2014.  I'm sending the publishers all kinds of biographical material right this minute!  Like all of the awards I've nearly won!
